By the fifth day my legs were really talking, I was beginning to miss my friends in Copenhagen and I figured I probably should study for a day or two before my final exam and so I began the trip to Vejle. For the first part of the morning the highlight was booking my train trip home on the phone in Danish. I was so stoked after that. But after about 45km when I decided it was time for lunch it started to rain. I took shelter in the forest until it passed but when I set out again the rain came back with a vengeance. I pulled over and put on my raincoat and rain pants and re-arranged my bag so it would be waterproof.
I started again and after about 500m there was a shop perfect for lunch but I didn't want to stop and so instead I started to climb this massive hill. Meanwhile it was bucketing down like I have never seen before in Denmark. My shoes began to soak through the holes I never fixed, the wind was strong and I began to wonder why I hadn't stopped when I had the chance. Mostly stubborness I guess but also I wanted to arrive in Vejle before the ticket office closed.
I continued and so did the rain. The route really annoyed me as there were so many steep hills that I practically walked half the way. I was so tired from riding more than 60km without hardly stopping and completely soaked as I discovered that my waterproof pants weren't so waterproof after all.
After battling the rain all the way through the fields and the forest I finally rolled into Vejle drowned and drained. I staggered into the ticket office 15 minutes before it closed leaving a river behind me.
Now I only had about six hours until my train arrived and so I spent a few hours drying myself out using the hand-dryer in the toilets. Eventually I had enough and went to the station waiting room. I got some strange looks when I pulled out some muesli, powdered milk and a camping saucepan from my bag and made breakfast.
But finally, after a couple of train trips and a short bike ride home I finished my adventure with a shower, a big bowl of pasta and a cup of tea before finally collapsing into bed at about 1am. It might not have been Jimeoin's Tea Towel Tour of Ireland but at least now I could tick off a couple of the places on my coffee mug.
Will Brian be able to walk tomorrow? Will he fall asleep in church tomorrow morning? And why is he still asking questions when this is the final episode?
