When I arrived home my host asked "But why did you go to Samsø?". And that's pretty much the answer. That, and that fact that the onions I buy at the supermarket come from Samsø and I wanted to see where they are grown.

So on day three of my adventure I set out to find my onions. I jumped on my bike and began riding through the country but pretty soon I realised that I have no idea what onions look like above the ground. There were plenty of signs for 'kartofler' (potatoes) and I even found some 'pastinakker' (parsnip, my favourite!) but by mid-morning the closest thing I had found to an onion farm was this little house:

Along the way I passed a flower-studded path with the sign 'Til Stranden' (to the beach). After yesterday's experience I thought I'd give Danish beaches another try but I arrived to find a mud-bath so full of seaweed you could walk on the water. Turning around I saw a sign overgrown with weeds. I cleared the weeds away to read,

I decided I could probably do better and so I continued.

A kilometre or so further on I arrived at a little tourist town complete with white sandy beaches and over-priced burgers. I stayed just long enough to give myself a heart-attack in the freezing water and then I moved on, desparate to find the onions but still without any idea what I should be looking for. In my desparation I started digging up random plants from the fields until finally....

They were too small to eat even if I wanted to but I was stoked anyway. I spent the rest of the day circumnavigating the entire island until I was totally exhasuted and could barely arrive back to my tent.
